Tues 12th – Surrey placemaking team event about traffic calming, Village Hall, from 3.30pm.

Surrey County Council’s placemaking team is holding an initial engagement session to gather views and feedback on traffic-calming measures for the village. The team wants to hear residents’ concerns regarding vehicle speeds along The Street and suggestions for potential speed reduction and traffic-calming measures. It is also an opportunity to ensure views regarding speed reduction/traffic-calming measures encompassing Down Lane and along the New Pond Road as far as the junction with Binscombe — also part of the village — are heard. According to the placemaking team, alongside comments/ideas regarding reducing speeds, residents are also encouraged to share with them the history of Compton as well as highlight heritage and placemaking elements, for example benches or planting. The team will start developing a first set of plans/designs to be consulted on after analysing the comments from the engagement. The placemaking team’s “Coffee & Chat” session will be held at the Village Hall on Tuesday 12 March, from 3.30pm until 7pm. Hot drinks will be available and there will be an area with crafts and materials for young children and families. Fri 19th – Milford Probus, Godalming Masonic Hall, from 12 noon.

Milford Probus Club’s next date in the diary is Friday 19 January. After a congenial lunch, David Bickerton will entertain members and visitors with a talk on an enduring and fascinating episode of World War II. More than a hundred British warships were involved in the five-day, 1,750 mile hunt for German battleship, The Bismarck. The British battlecruiser HMS Hood was sunk within 10 minutes of engaging The Bismarck, which escaped. David was inspired to research this historical event as his father was a crewman aboard HMS Dorsetshire which was involved in the final action. The talk follows lunch, which begins at 12.30pm (pre-lunch drinks from 12 noon), at Godalming Masonic Hall, GU7 1RQ. Milford Probus is a club for retired and semi-retired business and professional men and women who enjoy convivial company, informative talks and wider activities. Tues 9th – The Arts Society Woking’s talk, Normandy Village Hall, 10.30am.

On Tuesday 9 January, THE ARTS SOCIETY WOKING’S talk will be “Sixty Years On, Life in Britain as seen in 1960s Films”. There are four elements to this lecture, which will be given by Colin Schindler. The first is a look at the emergence of the North in Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, Room at the Top, A Taste of Honey, This Sporting Life etc. The second will explore Swinging Britain – Julie Christie in Darling, Michael Caine in Alfie, the Beatles in A Hard Day’s Night and the James Bond movies. The third will look at the last days of the Empire as seen in Tony Richardson’s Charge of the Light Brigade, Zulu and, comically, Carry On Up the Khyber. The final part will address the drastic change in the depiction of sex, from Dirk Bogarde in Victim (1961) to Alan Bates and Oliver Reed famously wrestling nude in Women in Love (1969). On Tuesday 13 February the talk, presented by James Lindow, is titled “Domenico Ghirlandaio — A Forgotten Renaissance Master”. Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449-1494) was one of the most successful artists of the fifteenth century. Born in Florence, Ghirlandaio established one of the leading studios producing works ranging from small devotional images to prestigious fresco cycles for churches in the city. Ghirlandaio’s success led him to Rome during the 1480s as part of a team of artists commissioned for the Sistine Chapel. Though a significant amount of his work remains in Florence, he is largely unappreciated today. To his contemporaries, however, Ghirlandaio’s style and organisational skills were greatly admired, leading the sixteenth century biographer Giorgio Vasari to claim he deserved to be “celebrated with extraordinary praise after his death”. Talks start promptly at 10.30 am but doors open 9.45 am for tea and coffee. The venue is Normandy Village Hall, Manor Fruit Farm, Glaziers Lane, Normandy, Guildford Surrey GU3 2DT. Members may bring a visitor, who may want to make a donation to the Society of £5. Visit www.wokingdfas.org.uk/talks-arts-society-woking-2024.htm.
