Parish Council

The Parish has approximately 1000 residents and 400 properties.

The Parish Council has been in existence since 1894 and is therefore one of the oldest civil parishes. There are seven members on the Council, elected for a 4-year term to represent the whole village.

Council meetings are usually held on the third Wednesday of the months of January, March, May, July, September, and November in Pucks Oak Barn, commencing at 7.00 pm.   Members of the public are welcome to attend meetings and may address the Council if time allows and on the invitation of the Chairman.

The Councillors for Compton are very active within the community and can be contacted via the Clerk to the Council.

The Parish Council owns Watts Chapel and Cemetery. In 2014 Watts Gallery Trust agreed to take on the long-term management of the Chapel and Cemetery, the Parish Council remains the Burial Authority and requests for information about burials should be directed to the Parish Council Clerk, Joanna Cadman - telephone 07711 566458

At present, only those people who live in Compton at the time of their death are eligible to be buried in a new grave, unless they previously purchased a plot whilst living in the parish.

Only residents of Compton are eligible to purchase a plot.

Applicants from outside the parish may have their ashes interred in an existing family grave (or, if the grave is a double one, a spouse living outside the parish may be buried in the grave).

Ashes may be scattered in the ash scattering area near zone 5, by any applicant, upon payment of a fee.

Applications from outside the Parish can be considered on a case by case basis by the Cemetery Committee / Parish Council - the criteria considered can be seen HERE.

The cemetery has been awarded a Grade II listing by English Heritage and the Chapel has long been Grade I. To retain the exceptional high quality expected of a cemetery of this standing, regulations must be adhered to and may be different to other cemeteries. A copy of the regulations can be found HERE.

Parish Council Responsibilities

Responsibilities for local services are divided between Surrey County Council for education, public transport, highways and police and Guildford Borough Council for housing, planning, public health, and waste collection to name but a few. The Parish Council is responsible for representing the views of parish residents on local matters.  In particular, it makes a contribution to:

Local planning applications and enforcement, transport, including the state of the highways, traffic calming, footpaths and other rights of way.

Village environment issues, drainage systems and grass cutting.

Village amenities.

The Parish Council has a primary responsibility for the recreation ground and playground, the allotments, bus shelters and the Watts Chapel and Cemetery, where it acts as the burial authority. The allotments are managed by the Allotment Society and on 16th May 2014, Watts Gallery Trust agreed to manage and maintain Watts Chapel and Cemetery.
