The next deadline for May 2024 edition is Saturday 20th April.

COMPTON NEWS

Delivering the NEWS As well as the NEWS being delivered to about 350 properties in Compton and Littleton, Jane Turner sends out over 600 by email. Over the years, the list of those who receive it by email has increased. At the same time, a fair number continue to prefer to receive a hard copy delivered to their door. This will not change. However, for those who receive a hard copy but are happy simply to receive the issue by email only, then do let Jane know so that she can amend her records and update the delivery schedule. Please contact Jane with your address so she can adjust the numbers for delivery and also your email address to be added to the online distribution. Jane’s details: janewturner@mac.com / 01483 810789 / 07763 146448.

A few points for you all to remember. YOU are the news – no news, no newsletter! The deadline for copy has always been the 20th of the month for the following month. This has never changed and it would be really helpful if you could all make a permanent note of this in your diaries, particularly those who contribute regularly. We will send out a reminder when the deadline approaches but don’t wait until the last minute - the earlier, the better! Please try and write the copy yourself and don’t rely on us to look up your websites. We can edit what you send but it’s helpful to have something to work from. Priority will always be given to Compton news and events but we do try to include other local items which we know are popular with our readers.

The Compton NEWS first appeared in May 1988, under Editor Les Williams.  He handed over to Jane Turner in October 1995 who after 27 years handed over to Sara Verbruggen in December 2022.  That first issue reported Scouts and Cubs, the idea for a village Minibus which came to be known as Compo, the Fete on 9th July, a report of Compton Little Theatre’s forthcoming productions, British Legion Bowls, the subscription to Compton Village Association of 60p per person or £1 per household and inevitably traffic through the village! Other activities in the village included Dance Club, Darby & Joan, Red Cross, Young Foresters, Bingo, Women’s Institute, “Meet Your Neighbour”, Youth Club, Mobile Library, Car Boot Sale.  In those early days, the NEWS didn’t always appear regularly and was only distributed in the village itself.  Now 400 copies are printed every month and distributed to the whole of Compton Parish with the help of 17 volunteers – Priorsfield Road, Priorswood, Priors Hatch Lane, Monkshatch, Down Place, Blackwell Farm, as well as Littleton village – and 600 are sent out on email, even as far as New Zealand.
