Sat 13th – Ride & Stride to save Surrey’s Churches!

Step, Cycle, Sip — Save Surrey’s Churches! The Surrey Churches Preservation Trust (SCPT) invites everyone to join the annual Ride & Stride on Saturday 13 September. This much-loved event is open to all, whether you’re a keen cyclist, a casual walker, or simply someone who enjoys a good coffee morning with friends. The aim is simple: to raise money to protect Surrey’s historic churches. Half of what you raise goes straight to your chosen church and the rest helps fund repair and conservation grants across the county. Since it began, Ride & Stride has raised over £500,000, directly supporting church buildings at the heart of our communities. This year, SCPT has more grant funding available than ever before—up to £3,000 per church—but to benefit, each church's supporters must take part. Even the smallest event can unlock vital funding. So step out, cycle on, or put the kettle on—every effort counts. Find out more at: www.surreychurchespreservationtrust.org/ride-stride/.

Tues 10th – The Arts Society Woking’s talk, Normandy Village Hall, 10.30am.

On Tuesday 10 June, ARTS SOCIETY WOKING’s talk is Inn Signia Pub Signs. The Artwork and the Stories behind their names. “There is nothing which has been yet contrived by man, by which so much happiness is produced as by a good tavern or inn” (Samuel Johnson). Pubs and their signs are a fundamental part of our history and cultural heritage. There are some 17,000 different pub names but why are there so many pubs called the ‘Red Lion’, the ‘Crown’ or ‘White Hart’? In this colourful and entertaining lecture John Ericson shows some of the most interesting and distinctive signs before exploring the fascinating stories behind the origin of some of their peculiar names. Who could fail to be intrigued by ‘The Bucket of Blood’, the ‘Cow and Snuffers’ or even the ‘Eager Poet’ – and who on earth was ‘Blind Jack’? Formerly a lecturer at the University of Bath where he was Director of Studies in the School of Education with responsibility for the professional development of teachers, John has been a popular speaker on the Arts Society circuit in the UK and Europe, as well as a frequent visitor to the societies in Australia and New Zealand. Talks start at 10.30am but doors open 9.45am for tea and coffee. The venue is Normandy Village Hall, GU3 2DT. Members may bring a visitor, who may want to make a donation to the Society of £6.

Fri 13th & Sat 14th – LynchPin Theatre production, The Mill Studio, Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, GU1 3UX.

  • Google Calendar ICS

Godalming-based LynchPin Theatre will be celebrating its 25th birthday by reviving its very first play, Emily Dickinson & I — the journey of a portrayal. The play charts an actor’s journey into the heart and soul of America’s foremost female poet, Emily Dickinson. Actor Edie Campbell leads the audience through her 14-year journey of writing, researching, performing… and putting on Emily Dickinson’s dress. The result is an intricately woven dual biography of poet and actor, as Campbell makes sense of her own experiences through Dickinson’s poems and letters. Devised by Edie Campbell and Jack Lynch, Emily Dickinson & I premiered at The Mill Studio, Guildford, in December 1999 before a hugely successful run at the Edinburgh Festival and tours, launching LynchPin on its theatrical journey. The play returns to The Mill Studio, Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, GU1 3UX, on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 December. For tickets phone 01483 440 000 or visit www.yvonne-arnaud.co.uk/whats-on.
