Compton Fete 2018

Yet again, we were blessed with wonderful weather on the day. In spite of competition from an event in Windsor, there was a steady flow of people who came to enjoy the stalls, games, refreshments and entertainment. The New Pond Road closure also had an effect on numbers as there was less passing trade. However, although scheduled to start an hour later than usual, crowds were already building up before the official opening. It is impossible to thank everyone who played a part in making the day such a success but, in no particular order, mention must be made of the Unsung Heroes from the village who turn out early in the morning to put up all the tents and then descend like locusts at the end of the afternoon to take them all down again! Then there is the regular (small) team who put in so much work before the event and on the day, starting at an unmentionable hour, planning and marking the layout, hanging the bunting, providing litter bins, stakes, ropes, transporting tables and chairs. And last but not least, all the individuals and organisations who run the stalls and sideshows, arrange the sound and music, provide the floats, count the money – you know who you are. An enormous THANK YOU to you all. The afternoon would not be complete without our professional and colourful host, David Ford, who brings his own special touch to the proceedings. Subject to a few minor changes, an amazing profit of £8,401 was the result. No records were broken this year but a few stalls made an increase on last year. Here are the details, with last year’s figures in brackets. Figures in boldunderlined indicate a record for that particular stall.
